DSCF1542Using a pendulum is so super easy, and you can make one with common household objects.  I’m also going to share with you the most common way to use a pendulum for divination.  In a later article, I will write about how you can see the movement of your chakras using a pendulum.

How to Make a Pendulum

All you need to make your pendulum is a string or necklace and a pendant or something to weigh down the string at the end.  It can be made of any material. You can also buy really nice, fancy shmancy pendulums, but today I used a piece of embroidery string with my engagement ring on it and it worked just fine.

Using a Pendulum for Divination

Pendulums are really good for yes/no questions.  The way it works is that the pendulum will move in one direction (clockwise or counterclockwise, horizontal or vertical) for yes and a different direction for no.  Hold the pendulum in a way that is comfortable for you.  I hold it with my thumb and forefinger and rest my elbow on the table, letting my wrist relax.  Adjust your pendulum so it only hangs 3-4 inches from your fingers.  (Some people prefer longer pendulums.  Follow what feels right to you.)

  • Begin with a basic grounding meditation to raise your energy vibration.  Another type of meditation or prayer is good too. Whatever works for you, as long as your are filling and surrounding yourself with positive, loving energy.
  • Holding your pendulum, ask to be shown what a “yes” answer looks like.  Wait for the pendulum to indicate.  It will start swinging or turning in a particular direction.  When you are satisfied, ask what a “no” answer looks like.
  • Still the pendulum and ask your first question.  After each question is answered, still the pendulum before asking your next question.

Handy Tips

Are you having issues with your pendulum?  I was too!  The following suggestions worked for me:

  • Use your pendulum away from electronics.  Mine wasn’t working until I moved away from my computer, and then it worked like a charm.
  • Rub your hands vigorously together to build up the energy in them and open your palm chakras.  Do this for about 30 seconds or until they feel warm.
  • Use objects that are meaningful to you and that have your energy on them for your pendulum.  Rings or a necklace you wear often are good choices.
  • If you have an emotional attachment to the outcome of your question, I found a great method to use from the about.com chat archives, Dowsing for Beginners.  Cut two small pieces of paper into identical rectangles.  Write “yes” on one and “no” on the other.  I used construction paper to make sure I wouldn’t see through the paper.  Turn the papers over and mix them up.  Ask your question.  Then, holding the pendulum over the first piece of paper, say to yourself or out loud, “If the correct answer to my question is on this piece of paper, please indicate with a ‘yes’ answer.”  See what happens.  Then, move it over the second piece of paper and repeat.  Whichever one was yes, turn it over and get the answer to your question.  When I used this method, one time I got “no” spins for both pieces of paper.  I took this to mean that either I am not meant to know the answer at this time or that things are still movin’ and groovin’ in the Universe and the answer is uncertain at this time.

Final Note

Having strong feelings about your question or wanting the pendulum to swing a certain way can interfere with the energy and cause uncertain results.  That is why it is important to do the beginning meditation and clear your mind. Release your expectations, knowing that whatever the outcome, everything happens for a positive reason.

Please feel free to ask any questions and let me know when you’ve been successful!
